Aniplex has revealed that the Lycoris Recoil original anime series is inspiring a new anime production. The format of the new project has not been announced yet.

The announcement comes with the tagline, “The story of the two will not end.”

The Lycoris Recoil girls-with-guns action anime aired from July to September 2022 with 13 episodes. The original series takes place in a Japan where the secret organization DA (Direct Attack) utilizes teenage female agents called Lycoris to maintain peace by preemptively stopping crimes with lethal methods. Chisato, the strongest Lycoris, and Takina, a serious-minded Lycoris, work at a DA branch called LycoReco that doubles as a legitimate cafe and provider of various services.

Shingo Adachi (Sword Art Online and WORKING!! character designer) served as director and series composer for the anime with Asaura (Shousetsu Knights of Sidonia: Kitto Arifureta Koi author) as story draft writer, Imigimuru (This Art Club Has a Problem! mangaka) as character designer, and A-1 Pictures as the animation production company.

Other staff include Yuusuke Maruyama (Yashahime: Princess Half-Demon: The Second Act opening director and storyboarder) as assistant director, Kenji Sawada (Shikimori’s Not Just A Cutie co-main animator) as weapon and action supervisor, Yumiko Yamamoto (Sword Art Online Alicization War of Underworld co-character designer) as sub-character designer, and Shuuhei Mutsuki (Three Leaves, Three Colors) as music composer.

Meanwhile, the cast includes Chika Anzai as Chisato, Shion Wakayama as Takina, Ami Koshimizu as Mizuki Nakahara,  Misaki Kuno as Kurumi, and Kousuke Sakaki as Mika.

Since its premiere, Lycoris Recoil has inspired a manga adaptation, spin-off manga, spin-off light novel, and stage play. The anime managed to catch the attention of Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima, who frequently tweeted about the show and provided a quote (and his face) for the obi of the light novel. Kojima also retweeted the announcement video of the new production.

The show was voted as Anime Trending’s Anime of the Season and Favorite Action or Adventure title during the Summer 2022 season, while protagonist Chisato was the Favorite Female Character of that season. Additionally, the chemistry between Chisato and Takina led to them becoming the Favorite Couple Ship of Summer 2022.
