Streaming platform HIDIVE has revealed that the North American premiere of OSHI NO KO has resulted in the “#1 series launch” in its history.

While HIDIVE didn’t provide any exact numbers, it announced in a press release that the reception during the anime’s “first seven days of release” allowed it to become “#1 in total streams and new subscribers (first streams) – not only for the Spring 2023 season but also for all-time.”

The entertainment industry-themed anime was also said to have contributed an impressive amount of trial registrations, to the point that it “shattered all trial starts records for HIDIVE” and resulted in “the most trials added in the streamer’s history.”

OSHI NO KO made its premiere on April 12, with HIDIVE being the exclusive streaming platform for the anime in North America. Since its debut, the anime, which is an adaptation of the Shueisha-published seinen manga series written by Aka Akasaka and drawn by Mengo Yokoyari, has become the current top-rated show on MyAnimeList. The opening song “Idol” by YOASOBI has also proven to be a hit, placing first on Billboard Japan’s Hot 100 Chart.

Yen Press describes the manga as:

Gorou is a gynecologist and idol fan who’s in shock after his favorite star, Ai, announces an impromptu hiatus. Little does Gorou realize that he’s about to forge a bond with her that defies all common sense! Lies are an idol’s greatest weapon in this outrageous manga from Aka Akasaka (Kaguya-sama: Love is War) and Mengo Yokoyari (Scum’s Wish).

The anime is directed by Daisuke Hiramaki (Selection ProjectAsteroid in Love) at Doga Kobo, with other main staff including:

• Assistant director: Chao Nekotomi (Love Is Like a Cocktail director [as Saori Tachibana], Shikimori’s Not Just A Cutie opening director and storyboard artist)
• Character designer and chief character designer: Kanna Hirayama (Rent-A-Girlfriend)
• Series composer: Jin Tanaka (Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club, Laid-Back Camp

Meanwhile, the cast includes Rie Takahashi as Ai, Takeo Ootsuka as Aqua, Yurie Igoma as Ruby, Kento Itou as Goro, Tomoyo Takayanagi as Sarina, Yumi Uchiyama as young Aqua, and Yurie Igoma as young Ruby.

Melvyn originally wanted to write about video games, and he did so for a few years, starting from his college days. He still writes about video games sometimes, but now focuses on anime-related news content and the occasional review. Some of his free time is spent self-learning Japanese, both out of interest in the language and because English-translated light novels and manga are expensive. Every anime season, Melvyn looks forward to discovering new standout episodes and OP/ED animation sequences, as well as learning about the storyboard artists and directors behind them.
