J.C Staff was in charge of animation production for the first season. Netflix streamed the series worldwide in 2021, releasing the first 12 episodes on August 26 and the remaining 13 on November 24.
Series director Yuuji Suzuki (Talentless Nana) unfortunately passed away before the anime’s broadcast could be completed. Having worked mainly as a key animator and single episode director throughout his career, EDENS ZERO was his first and only series he directed fully.
The series starred Takuma Terashima as Shiki Granbell, Mikako Komatsu as Rebecca Bluegarden, and Rie Kugimiya as Happy, reprising her role from Fairy Tail, which took place in another universe.
Shinji Ishihara (Log Horizon) was chief director of the first season while Mitsutaka Hirota (Rent-a-Girlfriend) was the main script writer. Yoshihisa Hirano (Death Note, Hunter x Hunter) served as music composer for the anime.
EDENS ZERO is based on the manga of the same name created by Hiro Mashima. It was first serialized in Weekly Shounen Magazine on June 27, 2018 and has collected 18 tankoubon volumes so far. Kodansha USA is publishing the manga in English.
Netflix describes the anime as:
It is the year X492, an age in which people freely travel through the universe. Rebecca, a video-creating B-Cuber, visits the robotic world of Granbell and meets a young man with special powers: Shiki, who’s lived his entire life among machines. Soon Shiki is exploring the cosmos with Rebecca, encountering new places, people and things, and making friends along the way. Join in the adventure starting in 2021 on Netflix.
