The upcoming Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan’s Island movie will premiere on June 3 in Japan, the anime’s Twitter page has announced. An illustration from Atsushi Tamura, the film’s chief animation director and co-character designer, was released with the announcement.
Cast details were also announced, with Tooru Furuya playing Amuro Ray, Ken Narita playing Bright Noa, Satomi Arai playing Mirai Yashima, Megumi Han playing Sayla Mass, Toshio Furukawa playing Kai Shiden, Hideki Nakanishi as Hayato Kobayashi, Misato Fukuen as Fraw Bow, and Tomofumi Ikezoe as Sleggar Law. The character images have been uploaded on the anime’s character page.
Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan’s Island was announced to have an early summer release back in December 2021. An announcement video and a teaser visual were also released at the time.
Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan’s Island was announced in September as one of three new Mobile Suit Gundam projects for 2022. The name comes from the original 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam series’ 15th episode, which was not released in North America. The SUNRISE English Twitter account said that the Cucuruz Doan’s Island movie will depict the original episode “from a new angle.”
Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, the character designer and animation director of the original series, is directing the movie. The other staff includes Im Ga-Hee (Sonny Boy episode director) as assistant director, Toshizou Nemoto (Bakuten!!) as scriptwriter, Yuuji Kaneko (Josee, Tiger and the Fish) as art director, Nagisa Abe (SCARLET NEXUS) as color designer, Morihito Abe (Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway co-CG director) as CG director, and Takayuki Hattori (Space Brothers live-action movie) as music composer.
Yasuhiko, Tamura (Weathering with You co-character designer) and Tsukasa Kotobuki (Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin co-character designer) are serving as character designers, while Kunio Okawara (GUNDAM BREAKER BATTLOGUE co-mecha designer, Mobile Suit Gundam), Hajime Katoki (Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory and Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway co-mecha designer), and Kimitoshi Yamane (Mobile Fighter G Gundam and Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway co-mecha designer) are serving as mecha designers. Sunrise is the animation production company.
