Voice actress Izumi Kitta was one of the many guests at CharaExpo 2019. Anime Trending got the chance to talk with her about her time in the US, her role in Cardfight!! Vanguard, and the quest for perfect gyoza.
Anime Trending: Thank you for coming out to Anaheim this weekend. First question — you’ve traveled a lot recently. After having spent time in the UK, and now the US, how have your experiences outside of Japan been?
Izumi Kitta: By going abroad, I realized how much everyone loves Japan. No one says bad things or rumors about Japan! So, I want to keep spreading what’s positive about Japan to these countries.
You’ve voiced Misaki for many years now, throughout the original Cardfight!! Vanguard anime, the G series, and the V series. How has the character changed in your mind over time, and what were some differences in portraying the character between each season?
Throughout the different series, you see different stages of life for Misaki, from high school to college and beyond. So early on, Misaki was more shy, not showing many emotions. But as she gets older, she shows more emotions and interacts with the other characters more. I also feel like Misaki becomes a bit closer to herself as she grows, showing more emotions and becoming more outgoing.
You’ve also sang in a number of opening and ending themes for Cardfight!! Vanguard. How do you view the relationship between singing and voice acting, including your experience in Tantei Opera Milky Holmes?
I actually don’t see much of a difference between the two. I think it’s largely the same for voice acting and singing, because when I sing as a character, I also put the feeling of the character in the song.
This question has kind of been answered already, since you played Vanguard in the gunslinger event this weekend. When playing, do you use the same clans that Misaki uses in the anime (Oracle Think Tank and Genesis)?
I like to play Oracle Think Tank, because Misaki mostly used Oracle Think Tank when I voiced her in the anime, and she spent a shorter amount of time with Genesis. I also play Cardfight!! Vanguard EX on Nintendo Switch and I use Oracle Think Tank in that game as well.
The episode previews for the Cardfight!! Vanguard anime include a lot of gags, and a recurring joke involves gyoza. It’s been referenced that you yourself are a “Gyoza Ambassador,” and you’ve even published books on gyoza! In your expert opinion, what makes the perfect or ideal gyoza?
Perfect gyoza, huh. My own gyoza, I guess? *laughs* I actually had some gyoza in London as well as here (in the US), and I really enjoyed it here. No matter where it’s from, as long as the person who made the gyoza made it with love, it will be delicious gyoza. Even when it doesn’t taste that good, if I can feel the love then it’ll still be its own kind of delicious. If I knew that a person made gyoza just for money or for business, then it wouldn’t taste good.
In the end, there’s no such thing as perfect gyoza. That’s why I keep on trying to make mine better and better, and I enjoy that process.
Is there anything you would like to say to your fans online who couldn’t come to CharaExpo?
It’s been 6 or 7 months since I started studying abroad. Before, when I was living in Japan and I traveled to overseas events and met my fans, I could only say “thank you.” But now that I’ve learned English, I’m happy to be able to properly thank them and communicate with them even more.
Lastly, do you have any other thoughts to share on your experiences at CharaExpo?
I’ve appeared at previous CharaExpos: three in Singapore and the first one in the US last year. I’ve been for Milky Holmes, Vanguard stages, and autograph sessions, but this year was the first time I got to play card games with players at the event. I’ve been playing card games for about 10 years, but mostly in Japan, so I was really happy to be able to play against players in the US. I’ve also played in Thailand before, but this was my first time doing so here.
The mobile game, Cardfight!! Vanguard ZERO is releasing globally in Spring 2020. Kitta will be reprising her role as Misaki in the game.
Special thanks to Bushiroad for the interview opportunity.
