A second season of the My Happy Marriage anime adaptation has been announced following the broadcast of the series’ 12th and final episode in Japan.

A Season 2 announcement visual and two commemorative illustrations, one from the light novels’ illustrator Tsukiho Tsukioka and the other by the manga adaptation’s artist Rito Kousaka, were released.

The first season of My Happy Marriage premiered on July 5, with Netflix streaming the show internationally. The KADOKAWA-published light novel series written by Akumi Agitogi began publication in January 2019 and has seven volumes as of July 2023.

Yen Press describes the books’ premise as:

IS THIS MARRIAGE A BLESSING? OR A CURSE?

Born talentless to a noble family famous for their supernatural abilities, Miyo Saimori is forced into an existence of servitude by her abusive stepmother. When Miyo finally comes of marriageable age, though, her hopes of being whisked away to a better life crumble after she discovers her fiancé’s identity: Kiyoka Kudou, a commander apparently so cold and cruel that his previous would-be brides all fled within three days of their engagements. With no home to return to, Miyo resigns herself to her fate—and soon finds that her pale and beautiful husband-to-be is anything but the monster she expected. As they slowly open their hearts to each other, both realize the other may be their chance at finding true love and happiness.

The anime is directed by Takehiro Kubota (ID:INVADED assistant director) with Sachiko Yasuda (Gekijouban Shoujo Kageki Revue Starlight chief animation director) as character designer; and Ami Satou (22/7 scriptwriter), Takahito Oonishi (The Strongest Sage With the Weakest Crest scriptwriter), and Momoka Toyoda (Shadows House scriptwriter) as series composers and scriptwriters. Kinema Citrus is the animation production company.

The cast includes Reina Ueda as Miyo Saimori, Kaito Ishikawa as Kiyoka Kudo, Ayane Sakura as Kaya Saimori, Koutarou Nishiyama as Kouji Tatsuishi, Hiro Shimono as Yoshito Godou, and Houko Kuwashima as Yurie.

My Happy Marriage was originally published as web novel on Shousetsuka ni Narou. Aside from the anime, the light novels have inspired a Square Enix-published manga adaptation, a live-action movie, and a stage reading. The light novel series is published under the Fujimi L Bunko label.

Melvyn originally wanted to write about video games, and he did so for a few years, starting from his college days. He still writes about video games sometimes, but now focuses on anime-related news content and the occasional review. Some of his free time is spent self-learning Japanese, both out of interest in the language and because English-translated light novels and manga are expensive. Every anime season, Melvyn looks forward to discovering new standout episodes and OP/ED animation sequences, as well as learning about the storyboard artists and directors behind them.
