The official website for Josee, The Tiger and the Fish released a new music video on December 21 for the movie’s theme song, “Ao no Waltz” (Blue Waltz), by Eve. The movie is set to premiere on December 25 after being delayed from its original summer opening due to COVID-19. It was first screened at the Tokyo International Film Festival (TIFF), which was held from October 31 to November 9, 2020.
Josee, The Tiger and the Fish’s staff includes Kotaro Tamura (Noragami, Noragami Aragoto) as director and Sayaka Kuwamura as scriptwriter. Nao Emoto (O Maidens in Your Savage Season manga) is credited as the creator for the original character designs, while Haruko Iizuka (Children of the Whales, Little Busters!, Tanaka-kun is Always Listless) is serving as both chief animation director and character designer. Flat Studio’s loundraw (Tsuki ga Kirei, I Want to Eat Your Pancreas character designer) is the movie’s concept designer. Evan Call (Violet Evergarden, Violet Evergarden the movie (2020)) is the music composer. Shochiku and Kadokawa will be distributing the film, and Studio BONES is in charge of the animation production.
Seiko Tanabe published the original short story, also named Josee, The Tiger and the Fish, in 1984 before it became part of the short story collection of the same name, which launched in 1985. The short story inspired a 2003 live-action adaptation as well as a South Korean live-action adaptation titled Josée, which premiered on December 10 this year in South Korea. A manga adaptation by Nao Emoto also ran from January to October in Kadokawa’s Da Vinci magazine this year.
Anime News Network describes the movie as:
Tsuneo is a university student and Josee is a young girl who has rarely gone out of the house by herself due to her being unable to walk. The two meet when Tsuneo finds Josee’s grandmother taking her out for a morning walk.
