The Ayase/YOASOBI YouTube channel has released an English version music video of “Idol,” the popular opening theme song for the currently airing OSHI NO KO anime adaptation.

The lyrics are included in the video’s description. Konnie Aoki handled the translation of Ayase‘s original lines.

The English version of “Idol” was announced on May 18. The Japanese language music video was released on April 12, the date of the anime’s premiere, and currently has 119 million views. Naoya Nakayama (“Chika Dance” ending sequence from Kaguya-sama Love is War, “stars we chase” performance sequence from Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club Season 2) directed, storyboarded, and unit directed the animated MV.

At the time of writing, the Japanese version of “Idol” is ranked first on Billboard Japan’s Hot 100, TikTok Weekly Top 20,  Streaming Songs, Top User Generated Songs, and Hot Animation charts. The song is based on the “45510” story written by the OSHI NO KO manga’s Aka Akasaka.

The entertainment industry-themed OSHI NO KO anime is streamed by HIDIVE and Bilibili outside of Japan. The manga, written by Akasaka with art by Mengo Yokoyari, began serialization in Weekly Young Jump in 2020 and has 10 tankoubon volumes as of January 2023. It is published under the Young Jump Comics label.

Yen Press describes the premise as:

Gorou is a gynecologist and idol fan who’s in shock after his favorite star, Ai, announces an impromptu hiatus. Little does Gorou realize that he’s about to forge a bond with her that defies all common sense! Lies are an idol’s greatest weapon in this outrageous manga from Aka Akasaka (Kaguya-sama: Love is War) and Mengo Yokoyari (Scum’s Wish).

The anime’s staff includes Daisuke Hiramaki (Selection ProjectAsteroid in Love) as director, Chao Nekotomi (Shikimori’s Not Just A Cutie opening director and storyboarder, Selection Project Episode 7 dance part director and storyboarder et al.) as assistant director, Kanna Hirayama (Rent-A-Girlfriend) as character designer and chief character designer, and Jin Tanaka (Love Live! Nijigasaki High School Idol Club, Laid-Back Camp) as series composer. Doga Kobo is the animation production company.

Meanwhile, the cast includes Rie Takahashi as Ai Hoshino, Takeo Ootsuka as Aqua Hoshino, Yurie Igoma as Ruby Hoshino, Megumi Han as Kana Arima, Manaka Iwami as Akane Kurosawa, and Rumi Ookubo as Mem-Cho.
