One of Hayao Miyazaki’s earliest manga, Shuna’s Journey, will be published for the first time in English, nearly 40 years after its release in Japan. The 1983 watercolor-illustrated graphic novel will be translated by Alex Dudok de Wit and published by Macmillan’s graphic novel imprint, First Second Books. It will be released in bookstores on November 1, 2022.

Shuna’s Journey was first published in Tokuma Shoten’s Animage magazine on June 15, 1983 as a single-volume, softcover book. It was then adapted into a 60-minute radio drama on May 2, 1987, with Youji Matsuda voicing the lead character.

Miyazaki based the manga’s story on a Tibetan folk tale and the work is notable for setting the groundwork for his feature films, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind and Princess Mononoke. Matsuda would also voice Ashitaka in the latter film.

Translator Alex Dudok de Wit likened Shuna’s Journey to an illustrated story more than a traditional manga. He also explained that Goro Miyazaki’s Tales From Earthsea also borrowed elements from the work and that it was a strange, beautiful story with some somber twists.

SHUNA also prefigures other Studio Ghibli films, including PRINCESS MONONOKE (which borrows visual and narrative ideas from it) and Goro Miyazaki's TALES FROM EARTHSEA (which is explicitly based in part on the book).
