The production of a new Galaxy Express 999<\/em> theatrical anime has been announced, almost 50 years since the first movie from 1979.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rintaro<\/strong> (director of Galaxy Express 999<\/em>, the X\u00a0<\/em>movie, and Metropolis<\/em>) is handling the story drafts for the new movie, while Toei Animation<\/strong> is the animation production studio.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Galaxy Express 999\u00a0<\/em>began in 1977 as a manga, serialized in Shonengahosha’s Weekly Shonen King, by the late Leiji Matsumoto<\/strong><\/a>, with the story seeing the young Tetsuro Hoshino joining the mysterious Maetel on a journey to the planet Andromeda, where Tetsuro can receive a mechanical body to avenge his mother. Aside from the 1979 movie, there was a TV anime that ran from 1978 to 1981 and another anime film titled Sayonara<\/em>\u00a0Galaxy Express 999: Andromeda Shuchakueki<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n

Galaxy Express 999 is the name of a train which travels through space, beginning at Megalopolis Station on one end of the galaxy and terminating at Andromeda on the other. But the Galaxy Express is more than just a train, it\u2019s also a metaphor for life itself, with passengers constantly boarding, debarking, and dreaming along the way.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

Tetsuro Hoshino is a youth who\u2019ll give anything to board the Three-Nine, including a promise to accompany a mysterious woman named Maetel all the way to Andromeda, the planet where, she tells him, he can get a free machine body to avenge the cruel death of his mother at the hands of the villainous Count Mecha. But nothing is as easy as it sounds, and Tetsuro is about to learn the true price not only for boarding the Three-Nine and avenging his mother, but for leaving his childhood behind, falling in love, and becoming a man.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Galaxy Express 999<\/em> anime music video<\/a>, \u201cOrbital Resonance,\u201d was released last December as the second project from the GREEN OCEAN creators label. The label was co-founded by Toei Animation<\/strong>, entertainment company DeNA<\/strong>, and Tokyo University of the Arts<\/strong>\u2018 (Tokyo Geidai) Department of Animation\u2019s Planning and Development Office to provide training, produce a new generation of creators with skills applicable on the world stage, and provide better hands-on support for young creators.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
