The Puella Magi Madoka Magica X/Twitter account has announced that the Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Walpurgisnacht Rising movie made 1.53 billion yen (~US$9.9 million) in its first ten days, with a moviegoer count of 900 thousand.
The bulk of the gross came from the anime’s first four days, with the account reporting on September 1 that it had made over 1 billion yen. Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Walpurgisnacht Rising opened on August 28 with both regular and IMAX screenings, with plans to add 10 Dolby Cinema locations on September 18.
In comparison, 2013’s Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Rebellion, which Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Walpurgisnacht Rising serves as a sequel to, had a total gross of 2 billion yen (unadjusted for inflation) and a total moviegoer count of 1.5 million. At the time, Rebellion was reported to be the fastest late-night anime-based movie to hit 1 billion yen (doing so in eight days) and, later, the highest-grossing title among such films, overtaking 2011’s K-On! The Movie. Rebellion opened in 129 locations, while the new Madoka Magica movie is reported to have opened in 292 locations, with IMAX and Dolby Atmos screenings included).
At the September 4 to 6 Japanese weekend box office ranking, Walpurgisnacht Rising fell from first place to third, ceding its former position to a resurgent Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of the Mermaid Isla.
The Puella Magi Madoka Magica franchise began with the 2011 dark magical girl TV anime of the same name. The original series featured a setting where young girls making contracts with the enigmatic creature Kyubey, becoming magical girls to fight frightening Witches in exchange for having a wish fulfilled, while unaware of the dark truths involved.
Walpurgisnacht Rising was announced in April 2021 and had winter 2024 and winter 2025 as its previous release windows. Aniplex of America and, more recently, Aniplus Asia have announced their acquisitions of the movie.
