Montreal-based comics publisher Drawn & Quarterly announced that it has licensed and will release several titles in English at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, including Hinako Sugiura‘s Lady Hokusai historical manga.
Sugiura’s Lady Hokusai manga series will be translated by David Boyd and released by Drawn & Quarterly in fall 2027. The manga was originally published in Japan by Jitsugyo no Nihon Sha from 1983 to 1987 and released three total volumes. The series is known in Japan as Sarusuberi.
Lady Hokusai previously inspired a 2015 anime film from Production I.G, which was directed by Keiichi Hara (Lonely Castle in the Mirror, Birthday Wonderland). It was released in English by GKIDS under the title Miss Hokusai.
Drawn & Quarterly also licensed Shigeo Ito’s Marmalade Princess manga, which the publisher describes as an “urban slacker novella.” The manga will be translated by Boyd and will be released in spring 2027. It will be Ito’s first manga to be released in English.
Additionally, the publisher is planning the release of three manga titles throughout the rest of 2026 and early 2027, including Murasaki Yamada’s Sassy Cats on November 3, 2026 and Hideshi Hino’s A Lullaby From Hell on November 10, 2026.
Yoko Kondo’s One Woman and the War manga will also be released in spring 2027 and translated by Boyd. The English release was first announced in July 2025 and is a retelling of Ango Sakaguchi’s 1946 novel from the perspective of a woman.
