Scholastic’s Graphix imprint announced that it will be releasing the first volume of Unico: Awakening on August 6, 2024. The title is Scholastic’s first title in the manga market and was originally funded through a 2022 Kickstarter campaign.

Unico: Awakening is a reimagining of Osamu Tezuka’s 1976 manga series that released two total tankobon volumes. It is developed in collaboration with Tezuka Productions, with Samuel Sattin (A Kid’s Guide to Anime & Manga, The Essential Anime Guide: 50 Iconic Films) credited as author for the manga and Gurihiru (Gwenpool, Spider-Man & Venom: Double Trouble) as the illustrator. The book features full-color artwork and left to right pages in the Western comics style that matches the original manga.

Scholastic describes the synopsis of Unico: Awakening as:

Unico tells the unforgettable story of a young unicorn who, after enraging the goddess Venus with his ability to positively impact human emotions, is banished from the heavens and taken across space and time until he forgets all he once was. Saved from oblivion by the West Wind, Unico continues to help others, before having to escape the gods again and begin a new adventure. In this first adventure, Unico is befriended by a resourceful watch-cat, Chloe, who feels protective of the young unicorn. When they find themselves near a small village in the forest, they take refuge with a kindly, but helpless old woman. To take care of her, Chloe begs Unico to turn her into a human girl, but that act of kindness has unforeseen consequences: Unico’s love has awakened the evil goddess Venus and her minion, Byron, who want to destroy them both!
