Netflix has announced this week that Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron will stream on its service in several international regions, excluding the U.S. and Japan. The company will announce a premiere date for the film later this year.

The streaming service plans to release The Boy and the Heron in several regions such as the Asia Pacific (excluding Japan), Europe, Middle East, Africa, and Latin America markets in the coming months. It extended its own deal with film production company Goodfellas and GKIDS to continue releasing twenty-two Studio Ghibli films outside the U.S. and Japan.

Some of the newly licensed Ghibli titles on Netflix include Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Arrietty, Kiki’s Delivery Service, My Neighbor Totoro and The Tale of The Princess Kaguya. Those titles will be available to stream in Asia Pacific, Europe, Middle East, Africa and Latin America, with subtitles in 28 languages and up to 20 dubbed languages.

Netflix’s announcement comes after GKIDS and HBO’s Max streaming service both signed a multi-year extension deal to keep the studio’s library on the Warner Bros. Discovery platform.

The Boy and the Heron won the Oscar for “Best Animated Feature” at the 96th Academy Awards, and was awarded “Best Animated Work” at the 47th Japan Academy Film Prize and in the “Best Animated Motion Picture” at the Golden Globe Awards. It also won two Annie awards in Best Character Animation – Feature and Best Storyboarding – Feature, and a Golden Globe Award in the Best Animated Motion Picture category.

Miyazaki’s film first premiered in Japan on July 14, 2023 under the title of Kimitachi wa Dou Ikiru Ka? (How Do You Live?). It was then screened in North American theaters by GKIDS on December 8, 2023.

GKIDS describes the synopsis of The Boy and the Heron as:

After losing his mother during the war, young Mahito moves to his family’s estate in the countryside. There, a series of mysterious events lead him to a secluded and ancient tower, home to a mischievous gray heron. When Mahito’s new stepmother disappears, he follows the gray heron into the tower, and enters a fantastic world shared by the living and the dead. As he embarks on an epic journey with the heron as his guide, Mahito must uncover the secrets of this world, and the truth about himself.
