A trailer for The Apothecary Diaries‘ second cour has been released. It includes a preview of new characters, the new theme songs, and a new case for Maomao to deal with.

The new characters include Takuya Kirimoto as Rakan and Kaori Nazuka as Suirei. The new theme songs are “Ambivalent” by Uru and “Ai wa Kusuri” by wacci.

Cour 2 of The Apothecary Diaries will premiere in Japan on January 6 (effectively January 7 at 12:55 AM JST).

The Apothecary Diaries premiered in late October with its first three episodes. Crunchyroll and Netflix are streaming the show. The anime is an adaptation of the Shufunotomo-published light novels written by Natsu Hyuuga and illustrated by Touko Shino, which J-Novel Club describes the plot as:

In the East is a land ruled by an emperor, whose consorts and serving women live in a sprawling complex known as the hougong, the rear palace. Maomao, an unassuming girl raised in an unassuming town by her apothecary father, never imagined the rear palace would have anything to do with her—until she was kidnapped and sold into service there. Though she looks ordinary, Maomao has a quick wit, a sharp mind, and an extensive knowledge of medicine. That’s her secret, until she encounters a resident of the palace at least as perceptive as she is: the head eunuch, Jinshi. He sees through Maomao’s façade and makes her a lady-in-waiting to none other than the Emperor’s favorite consort… so she can taste the lady’s food for poison! At her lady’s side, Maomao starts to learn about everything that goes on in the rear palace—not all of it seemly. Can she ever lead a quiet life, or will her powers of deduction and insatiable curiosity bring her ever more adventures, and ever more dangers?

The light novels started in 2014 and have 14 volumes as of September 2023. Before 2014, The Apothecary Diaries began serialization on Shousetsuka ni Narou in 2011. A single tankoubon volume was published under the Ray Books label (also from Shufunotomo Infos) in 2012.

The light novels have inspired a Square Enix-published manga by Nekokurage (also available in English) and a Shogakukan-published manga (subtitled Mao Mao no Kōkyuu Nazotoki Techou) by Minoji Kurata.
