The VRMMO-themed Shangri-La Frontier anime has received a new trailer and visual previewing the next chapter of protagonist Sunraku’s journey through the titular virtual reality game. The trailer for the “Shigan yori Ai wo Komete Hanataba wo” chapter teases a team-up between Sunraku, Arthur, and the pro gamer OiKatzo, as well as a special enemy located at a massive cherry blossom tree.

There are also new cast announcements: Asami Seto as Setsuna of Bygone Days and Shou Hayami as Wethermon the Tombguard. The latter is the “unique monster” that Sunraku will face.

Shangri-La Frontier is based on the Kodansha-published Shangri-La Frontier: Kusoge Hunter, Kamige ni Nidoman tosu ~ manga written by Katarina and drawn by Ryousuke Fuji. Crunchyroll describes the anime as:

“When was the last time I played a game that wasn’t crap?” This is a world in the near future where games that use display screens are classified as retro. Anything that can’t keep up with state-of-the-art VR technology is called a “crap game,” and you see a large number of crap games coming out.

Those who devote their lives to clearing these games are called “crap-game hunters,” and Rakuro Hizutome is one of them. The game he’s chosen to tackle next is Shangri-La Frontier, a “god-tier game” that has a total of thirty million players. Online friends… An expansive world… Encounters with rivals… These are changing Rakuro and all the other players’ fates! The best game adventure tale by the strongest “crap game” player begins now!

Shangri-La Frontier: Kusoge Hunter, Kamige ni Nidoman tosu ~ began in 2020 and has 15 tankoubon volumes as of October 2023. The series is serialized in Weekly Shonen Magazine and published under the KC Deluxe label. The manga is also an adaptation, with the story originating as a Shousetsuka ni Narou web novel in 2017.

Aside from Crunchyroll, Bilibili and the Muse Asia YouTube channel are among the platforms streaming the show outside Japan.
