KADOKAWA has released the opening animation of The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 3, which had its premiere on October 6. Some cuts from the opening had been previewed in the anime’s recent second trailer.

Set to MADKID‘s “SIN,” the opening for the third season of The Rising of the Shield Hero features some instantly memorable cuts of animation and a compositing style that quickly gives away the identity of the person at its helm: Shingo Yamashita. Yamashita, whose last few anime openings include Chainsaw Man, Ranking of Kings (second opening), and Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1, is credited as, among other things, storyboard artist, unit director, and (co-) compositing director here.

The Rising of the Shield Hero is based on the MF Books label light novel series written by Aneko Yusagi and illustrated by Seira Minami, which began in 2013 and has 22 volumes as of 2019. One Peace Books describes the light novels as:

Naofumi Iwatani, an uncharismatic otaku who spends his days on games and manga, suddenly finds himself summoned to a parallel universe! He discovers he is one of four heroes equipped with legendary weapons and tasked with saving the world from its prophesied destruction. As the Shield Hero, the weakest of the heroes, all is not as it seems. Naofumi is soon alone, penniless, and betrayed. With no one to turn to, and nowhere to run, he is left with only his shield. Now, Naofumi must rise to become the legendary Shield Hero and save the world!

The first two seasons of the anime premiered in 2019 and 2022. Some of the new cast additions for Season 3 include Ami Koshimizu as Nadia, Kouhei Amasaki as Fohl, Konomi Kohara as Atla, and Maria Naganawa as S’yne. Crunchyroll is streaming the show.
