The production team for the new Kinnikuman TV anime announced that the series is scheduled to air in 2024, adapting the “Perfect Origin Arc” storyline. A new key visual featuring the titular character has also been released.

The anime was released to commemorate the franchise’s 40th anniversary. The new series will take place after the previous story arc of the manga’s 2011 revived publication and is not a remake or reboot.

Akira Satou (Aoashi) is serving as the director for the anime, with Makoto Fukami (Tengoku Daimakyou/Heavenly Delusion) as series screenwriter, Hirotaka Marufuji (Lupin the 3rd Part 6) as character designer, and Yasuharu Takanashi (Kengan Ashura) as music composer. Production I.G is handling the animation production.

The Kinnikuman franchise has spawned various spin-off manga and anime adaptations, video games, anime films, and merchandise such as action figures and collectible erasers. One of the manga spinoff series, Kinnikuman Lady, was recently published from June 2008 to June 2013.

The original Kinnikuman manga is created by creative duo Yudetamago, consisting of writer Takashi Shimada and artist Yoshinori Nakai. It originally ran in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from May 28, 1979 to May 4, 1987. The manga was then revived on November 28, 2011 for a second run in Shueisha’s web magazine Shuu Play News, where it continues to be serialized. A total of 83 tankoubon volumes have been released as of September 2023.

The first long-running TV anime series from Toei Animation aired from April 3, 1983 to October 1, 1986 for a total of 137 episodes. In 2002, another Kinnikuman anime series was licensed by 4Kids Entertainment and aired on the Fox Box programming block under the title Ultimate Muscle: The Kinnikuman Legacy. The first season consisted of 51 total episodes and aired in 2002. The second season contained 26 episodes and aired from 2003 to 2004. Discotek Media licensed both seasons and released the full 77-episode series on Blu-ray earlier this year.

Kinnikuman follows the titular character, whose real name is Suguru Kinniku, who is seen as a clumsy, foolish superhero. He learns that he is the missing prince of the planet Kinniku — a distant planet known for creating the greatest superheroes in the universe. To prove his worth of the planet’s throne, he enters several wrestling tournaments and faces off against evil supermen known as battle evil Choujins.
