Author and former Crunchyroll/Otaku USA editor Patrick Macias has released a seven-minute anime short directed by the late Osamu Kobayashi, based on Macias’ sci-fi webcomic HYPERSONIC music club (illustrated by Hiroyuki “MITSUME” Takahashi). The short is available to watch on Macias’ Tokyoscope blog.

Macias says that the HYPERSONIC music club anime was produced in 2017 (the webcomic, which features cyborgs fighting “extra-dimensional monster girls,” was announced in 2015) and was not released previously due to “various reasons.” Kobayashi handled the scenario writing in addition to directing, and was joined by a formidable staff lineup that includes:

Takashi Mukouda (Run With the Wind co-main animator, Welcome to the Ballroom action animation director) as character designer and chief animation director
Hisashi Mori as animator
Mitsuo Iso (The Orbital Children and Den-noh Coil director) as animator
Yoshimichi Kameda (Mob Psycho character designer) as director

Macias also released a key art of the anime drawn by Kobayashi, and has plans to make other production material available, including original production art and Kobayashi’s sketches.

Kobayashi passed away from kidney cancer in April 2021, aged 57. His directorial works included 2004’s BECK, 2005’s Paradise Kiss, 2008’s Mahoutsukai ni Taisetsu na Koto: Natsu no Sora, and Naruto Shippuden from Episode 480 to Episode 483.
