The long-running One Piece anime series from Toei Animation began airing in 1999 and surpassed the 1000th episode mark on November 21, 2021. The 15th One Piece anime film, One Piece Film Red, premiered in Japan in August 2022 and ended its run as the country’s eighth highest-grossing film and as one of the highest-grossing anime movies worldwide. Crunchyroll and iQIYI stream the anime series outside of Japan.
The original manga series by Eiichirou Oda began its serialization in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump on July 22, 1997. A total of 106 tankoubon volumes have been released as of July 2023. The manga is currently published under the Jump Comics label. Prior to the current series and movies, the manga inspired an OVA in 1999 from Production I.G.
Viz Media releases the manga series in English and describes the story as:
As a child, Monkey D. Luffy was inspired to become a pirate by listening to the tales of the buccaneer “Red-Haired” Shanks. But his life changed when Luffy accidentally ate the Gum-Gum Devil Fruit and gained the power to stretch like rubber…at the cost of never being able to swim again! Years later, still vowing to become the king of the pirates, Luffy sets out on his adventure…one guy alone in a rowboat, in search of the legendary “One Piece,” said to be the greatest treasure in the world…
