Netflix has revealed a new trailer for the upcoming Gamera: Rebirth anime series, which will be released on the streaming platform September 7, 2023. The trailer was revealed at this year’s San Diego Comic Con event, where director Hiroyuki Seshita (Knights of Sidonia) and kaiju designer Kan Takahama were in attendance for autograph sessions.

The new trailer highlights the series’ main characters and intense kaiju battles. It also previewed the anime’s opening theme “NATSUAKE,” performed by Japanese rock band WANIMA. The band also sings the ending theme “FLY & DIVE.”

Additionally, a fifth and final visual for the kaiju Viras has also been released. Previous visuals highlighted other kaiju figures such as Gamera, Gyaos, Jiger, Zigra, and Guiron.

Other production staff for Gamera: Rebirth includes Kenta Ihara (Handyman Saitou in Another World) and Hiroshi Seko (Summer Time Rendering) as series screenwriters, Keisuke Ide (Levius) as assistant director, Atsushi Tamura (Weathering With You co-character designer) as character designer, Kouji (Knights of Sidonia) as animation director, and Takehiko Hoashi (Levius) as mechanical designer. ENGI is in charge of the animation production for the series.

The Gamera franchise first began with the 1965 tokusatsu film Gamera the Giant Monster. The film was produced by Daiei, which fell under the Kadokawa Group’s management in 2002. Following a name change and “renewal” in 2004 and a 2011 merger with Kadokawa Shoten, Daiei split off from Kadokawa Shoten in 2013 and became Kadokawa Daiei Studio.

The official website for Gamera: Rebirth describes the synopsis as:

In the summer of 1989, Boko, Joe, and Junichi, all sixth grade elementary school students, were having their last summer vacation. Each of them is worried about their future. Brody, the son of a US military commander, appears before the three of them and steals away the money they have saved together. Boko and his friends are furious and plan a plan to get their money back. As they are about to carry out the plan, the town is threatened. The kaiju Gyaos suddenly attacks Tokyo. The four are petrified in a town ruined by Gyaos. As Gyaos sets its sights on them, a huge kaiju appears. Its name is Gamera.

This is the beginning of their “Summer of Kaiju.” Kaiju appear one after another, and Gamera fights back despite his wounds. The boys witness the legend.
