At Netflix’s Anime Expo 2023 industry panel, the cast members for the live-action One Piece TV adaptation confirmed that the original Japanese voice cast for Luffy, Zoro, Nami, Usopp, and Sanji are reprising their roles for the series’ Japanese dub.

Netflix also posted a special video of Luffy’s live-action actor Iñaki Godoy meeting Luffy voice actress Mayumi Tanaka for the first time. The video includes both Godoy and Tanaka saying Luffy’s signature catchphrase in Japanese, as well as Tanaka placing a straw hat on Godoy’s head, in similar fashion to how Shanks gifted the hat to Luffy.

Godoy and Taz Skylar will also dub Luffy and Sanji in the Spanish language.

The main cast for the live-action One Piece series features Iñaki Godoy as Luffy, Mackenyu as Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd as Nami, Jacob Romero Gibson as Usopp, and Taz Skylar as Sanji. Other cast members include Peter Gadiot as Shanks, Morgan Davies as Koby, Alexander Maniatis as Klahadore, Steven Ward as Mihawk, Craig Fairbrass as Chef Zeff, Langley Kirkwood as Captain Morgan, Celeste Loots as Kaya, and Chioma Umeala as Nojiko.

Netflix’s One Piece TV series is a co-production with Tomorrow Studios, who produced the live-action Cowboy Bebop series and other shows like Snowpiercer and Let The Right One In. Steven Maeda (Pan Am) and Matt Owens (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Luke Cage writer) are the showrunners, with Owens also serving as scriptwriter.

The original manga series by Eiichirou Oda was first launched in Shuiesha’s Weekly Shonen Jump on July 22, 1997 and published under the Jump Comics label. A total of 105 tankoubon volumes have been released as of March 2023. A 106th volume is due for release on July 4, 2023.

The manga has inspired a 1999 OVA from Production I.G and a long-running TV anime series from Toei Animation that began in 1999. It surpassed the 1000th episode mark on November 21, 2021. The 15th One Piece anime film, One Piece Film Red, premiered in Japan on August 6, 2022 and ended its run as the country’s eighth highest-grossing film.

VIZ Media releases the One Piece manga series in English and describes the synopsis as:

As a child, Monkey D. Luffy was inspired to become a pirate by listening to the tales of the buccaneer “Red-Haired” Shanks. But his life changed when Luffy accidentally ate the Gum-Gum Devil Fruit and gained the power to stretch like rubber…at the cost of never being able to swim again! Years later, still vowing to become the king of the pirates, Luffy sets out on his adventure…one guy alone in a rowboat, in search of the legendary “One Piece,” said to be the greatest treasure in the world…
