Gurren Lagann Movies Getting 4K Ultra HD BD, Theatrical Re-release for 15th Anniversary

The Gurren Lagann movies, Gurren Lagann The Movie: Childhood’s End and Gurren Lagann The Movie: The Lights in the Sky are Stars, are receiving 4K Ultra HD BD releases and a limited theatrical re-release as part of the anime series’ 15th anniversary. 

The “revival theatrical screening” will kick off with 2D screenings for the two films, which will begin on August 25 and September 22 in Japan. Later, Gurren Lagann The Movie: Childhood’s End and Gurren Lagann The Movie: The Lights in the Sky are Stars will have their first ever 4DX & MX4D screenings, with the former’s run taking place from October 6 to October 19. Gurren Lagann The Movie: The Lights in the Sky are Stars will follow from October 20 to November 2.

North America will also receive screenings of the two movies, with the release date set for winter.

As for the 4K UHD BD, it will be released on September 27 for 14,080 yen (~US$97.55, tax-included).

Gurren Lagann The Movie: Childhood’s End and Gurren Lagann The Movie: The Lights in the Sky are Stars were originally released in 2008 and 2009, respectively. They are compilation movies of the 2007 series.

Gainax produced the anime with Hiroyuki Imaishi as director, Kazuki Nakashima as series composer, and Atsushi Nishigori as character designer. The cast includes Crunchyroll describes the plot as:

This is the story of a man who has yet to realize what destiny holds in store for him…In the distant future, mankind has lived quietly and restlessly underground for hundreds of years, subject to earthquakes and cave-ins. Living in one such village are 2 young men: one named Simon who is shy and naïve, and the other named Kamina who believes in the existence of a “surface” world above their heads.
