Bandai Namco Entertainment has released an announcement trailer for Sand Land, a new action RPG inspired by the 2000 manga from Dragon Ball‘s Akira Toriyama.
Set in a water-starved desert world inhabited by both demons and humans, Sand Land promises a “vast world” that players, as the diminutive but superpowered “Fiend Prince” Beelzebub, can explore on foot or in vehicles as they search for a “Legendary Spring,” The game world will have secrets to discover, characters to meet, and threats like massive sand-burrowing creatures, and the trailer also seems to suggest the presence of bases for Beelzebub to sneak into.
Beelzebub possesses both super strength and telepathic capabilities, and he’ll be able to put both to good use in melee scraps. However, Sand Land will also feature a heavy dose of vehicular combat, lending a bit of a Max Mad-vibe to the game. Some of the previewed vehicles include a tankette with a laser turret and a disproportionate amount of missiles, a bulky mech that relies on its fists, and an open-topped mech with an emphasis on devastating enemies at range. Bandai Namco says that players will be able to customize their vehicles and equip them with loadouts.
The game’s website also reveals that aside from tinkering with vehicles, players can busy themselves with developing a base of their own “into a thriving city with the help of the people you meet along the way in the vast desert.”
Sand Land is developed by ILCA Inc. for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, and Steam. The release date is still under wraps.
The Sand Land manga ran for 14 chapters in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump and is collected into a single volume. Bandai Namco announced the existence of a Sand Land project last December, with an anime movie adaptation being revealed later the same month.
Viz Media describes the manga as:
In the far future, war has destroyed the entire Earth, leaving only a barren wasteland where the supply of water is controlled by the greedy king. In search of a long-lost lake, Sheriff Rao asked the king of the demons for help…and got the king’s son, Beelzebub, and his assistant, Thief. Together the unlikely trio sets off across the desert, facing dragons, bandits and the deadliest foe of all… the King’s army itself! It’s travel adventure and tank action in this new story from Akira Toriyama, the creator of Dragon Ball Z!
