Netflix has released a new key visual for the Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King anime movie. The visual, drawn by character designer Itsuko Takeda, depicts a confrontation between Asta and the former Wizard King Conrad.

Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King will premiere on Netflix on June 16. It was originally meant to be released on March 31. The movie features an original plot supervised by Black Clover creator Yuuki Tabata, which Netflix describes as:

As a lionhearted boy who can’t wield magic strives for the title of Wizard King, four banished Wizard Kings of yore return to crush the Clover Kingdom.

The returning cast from the series include Gakuto Kajiwara as Asta, Nobunaga Shimazaki as Yuno, Junichi Suwabe as Yami Sukehiro, and Kana Yuuki as Noelle Silva.

Meanwhile, the staff includes Ayataka Tanemura (Black Clover second half, Fuuto PI assistant director) as director, Johnny Onda (Black Clover: Yuno no Sho light novel author) and Ai Orii as scriptwriters, and Minako Seki (Black Clover) as music composer. Studio Pierrot is the animation production studio.

The Black Clover anime series ran from 2017 to 2021 with Tatsuya Yoshihara (Chainsaw Man action director) directing the first half and serving as chief director for the second. The Shueisha-published manga began in 2015 and has 35 tankoubon volumes as of June 2023.

The manga is serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump and published under the Jump Comics label. The Black Clover franchise also includes spin-off mangas, a light novel, and video games.

Melvyn originally wanted to write about video games, and he did so for a few years, starting from his college days. He still writes about video games sometimes, but now focuses on anime-related news content and the occasional review. Some of his free time is spent self-learning Japanese, both out of interest in the language and because English-translated light novels and manga are expensive. Every anime season, Melvyn looks forward to discovering new standout episodes and OP/ED animation sequences, as well as learning about the storyboard artists and directors behind them.
