Suzume, which debuted on November 11, placed eighth in its final weekend box office ranking. On the all-time ranking, the supernatural adventure movie remained in 14th place, which it attained in late March.
2016’s Your Name remains Shinkai’s biggest hit with a 25.17 billion yen (~US$180.4 million) gross and a 5th place spot on the all-time ranking. However, Suzume managed to outperform 2019’s Weathering With You (14.23 billion yen, or roughly US$101.99 million), which is now Japan’s 16th top-grossing movie after losing 15th place to the currently screening THE FIRST SLAM DUNK.
Suzume was directed and written by Shinkai with Masayoshi Tanaka (Weathering With You and Your Name co-character designer, Her Blue Sky) as character designer, Kenichi Tsuchiya (Flavors of Youth “Love in Shanghai” character designer, Your Name) as animation director, Takumi Tanji (Your Name co-art director, Children Who Chase Lost Voices) as art director, and RADWIMPS (Your Name, Weathering With You) and Kazuma Jinnouchi (Ultraman and Ghost In The Shell SAC_2045 co-composer, Halo 5: Guardians) as music composers. CoMix Wave Films produced the film.
Nanoka Hara starred as the film’s titular heroine while Hokuto Matsumura played her male co-lead Sota Munakata. Some of the other cast members include Eri Fukatsu as Tamaki Iwato, Shouta Sometani as Minoru Okabe, Sairi Ito as Rumi Ninomiya, Kotone Hanase as Chika Amabe, Kana Hanazawa as Tsubame Iwato, and Hakuo Matsumoto as Sota’s grandfather.
Crunchyroll describes the film as:
Suzume’s journey begins in a quiet town in Kyushu (located in southwestern Japan) when she encounters a young man who tells her, “I’m looking for a door.” What Suzume finds is a single weathered door standing upright in the midst of ruins as though it was shielded from whatever catastrophe struck. Seemingly drawn by its power, Suzume reaches for the knob… Doors begin to open one after another all across Japan, unleashing destruction upon any who are near. Suzume must close these portals to prevent further disaster.
Suzume‘s current worldwide gross is calculated to be around $321.5 million according to The Numbers.
