Netflix has announced that the Ōoku: the Inner Chambers anime adaptation will begin streaming on the platform on June 29. A trailer and key visual for the show have been released as well.
Ōoku: the Inner Chambers is based on the Hakusensha-published manga by Fumi Yoshinaga, which ran from 2004 to 2020 in Melody. Viz Media describes the manga’s plot as:
In Edo period Japan, a strange new disease called the Red Pox has begun to prey on the country’s men. Within eighty years of the first outbreak, the male population has fallen by seventy-five percent. Women have taken on all the roles traditionally granted to men, even that of the Shogun. The men, precious providers of life, are carefully protected. And the most beautiful of the men are sent to serve in the Shogun’s Inner Chamber…
Noriyuki Abe (Arad: Gyakuten no Wa, Kochoki: Wakaki Nobunaga) is directing the anime at Studio Deen with Rika Takasugi as series composer and scriptwriter, Youko Satou (Love of Kill) as character designer, and Kenji Kawai (The Fire Hunter) as music composer. Meanwhile, the cast includes:

• Eriko Matsui as Tokugawa Iemitsu
• Yuuki Kaji as Gyokuei
• Kikuko Inoue as Kasuga no Tsubone
• Jun Fukuyama as Sutezou

• Miyuki Satou as Onobu
• Sanae Kobayashi as Tokugawa Yoshimune
• Hitoshi Kubota as the narrator
The Ōoku: the Inner Chambers manga has been collected into nineteen tankoubon volumes. It previously inspired two live-action movies that were released in 2010 and 2012 and a 2012 live-action drama series.
