The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten Snuggles Its Way Into the Anime of the Season Title in Winter 2023 Anime Awards

Former 2019 Anime of the Year Winner Vinland Saga did not make a victorious return in the Anime Trending Awards this year as it was defeated by The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten for the Winter 2023 Anime of the Season Title, garnering a total of 14,173 votes. Vinland Saga placed third overall for the award with 11,902 votes. Finishing at second place with 13,823 votes is The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and The Genius Young Lady — the closest that a yuri anime has gotten to snagging the coveted prize. Previously, Bloom Into You had held the record since Fall 2018 where it placed third. These three anime are now nominated for Anime of the Year in the upcoming 10th Anime Trending Awards, alongside with the fourth-place series — Tomo-chan is a Girl!

Aside from winning this season’s grand prize, The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten also won five more awards, sweeping most of the character awards  and winning Favorite Romance Anime. This is the second time in the history of Anime Trending that the winning pairing, Amane Fujimiya and Shiina Mahiru (The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten), also won as the season’s best male and female characters respectively. The first pairing to achieve the same stint was Wakana Gojou and Marin Kitagawa (My Dress-up Darling) in the Winter 2022 Anime Awards. Fujimiya and Mahiru, as a pair, also put an end to the two-season winning streak of a yuri ship for the Favorite Couple or Ship award. Since Summer 2022,  Lycoris Recoil’s Chisato Nishikigi and Takina Inoue and Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury’s Miorine Rembran and Suletta Mercury won the aforementioned award. This season, Anisphia Wynn Palletia and Euphyllia Fez Palletia (The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and The Genius Young Lady) who finished second place.

The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten won the second highest total number of awards in a season in the history of Anime Trending, tied with BOCCHI THE ROCK! in Fall 2022 and Monthly Girls Nozaki-kun in Summer 2014. My Dress-up Darling holds the record for most seasonal awards won, taking home eight awards in Winter 2022. The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten’s win this season is spectacular and surprising given that it aired during  the same season as Vinland Saga, which won the 2019 Anime of the Year award.

Based on comments from the Anime Trending community, The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten’s triumph over Vinland Saga came down to the latter’s inability to meet fan expectations in its second season.Despite its initial popularity, Vinland Saga in its second season. Fans felt betrayed by the show’s dramatic and deliberate shift, as stated by the director, from the action-packed first season to the second season’s slower and character-driven approach.

Whereas The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten received criticism on the consistency of its animation quality, fans still liked its consistently enjoyable wholesome and sweet moments.

The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten was eligible for five other awards but ultimately failed to clinch them. Instead, Mizusu Gundou (Tomo-chan is a Girl!) won season’s Favorite Supporting Female Character. Her win automatically secures her nomination for the Supporting Girl of the Year award in the upcoming 10th Anime Trending Awards, and she is also nominated for Girl of the Year because she was among the four most-voted female characters(main or supporting) of this season overall. She placed higher than her series’ lead female character, Tomo Aizawa, who only placed 8th overall for the title. If Aizawa, who still has a second chance to get a nomination via the wildcard or second-chance round, is ultimately not nominated for the award, Gundou’s Girl of the Year nomination will mark the first instance in the history of Anime Trending that a supporting character from an anime series is nominated for Girl of the Year, but the main character from that same series is not.

Tomo-chan is a Girl! won two of five awards that The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten was in the running for — Favorite Comedy and Favorite Slice of Life Anime. Meanwhile, two new artists took home awards for their songs: Hanatan won Best Opening Theme Song for her, “Arc-en-ciel” (The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and The Genius Young Lady), and Nowlu won the Best Ending Theme Song award for her song, “Linaria” (The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague).  This is the second theme song titled “Linaria” to win a theme song award in the history of Anime Trending. The other “Linaria” was performed by maruritoryuga which was used as the ending theme song of Koikimo (Spring 2021).

The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague original manga author, Miyuki Tonogaya, congratulated Nowlu for her win in a tweet:

The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and The Genius Young Lady manga adaptation illustrator, Harutsugu Nadaka, in parallel, also congratulated the anime’s opening theme song artist Hanatan for winning the opening theme song award in a tweet. Hanatan herself also acknowledged the win.
