Suzume has overtaken director Makoto Shinkai‘s previous film Weathering With You on the Japanese all-time box office ranking. Suzume is now placed 14th with a total gross of 14.31 billion yen (~US$108.9 million).

In other anime-related Japanese box office news, the Gridman Universe movie, which debuted in Japan on March 24, placed fifth on the March 24-26 weekend ranking. The Trigger-produced movie features characters from both the SSSS.Gridman and SSSS.Dynazenon anime series.

At the top of the weekend ranking was Doraemon: Nobita’s Sky Utopia Soars, which drew in 322,000 moviegoers and earned 392 million yen (~US$2.98 million) over the weekend. The 42nd Doraemon anime movie had lost the spot to the then newly premiered live-action adaptation of the My Happy Marriage light novels during the March 17-19 ranking, but has otherwise consistently placed first since its March 2 premiere. Doraemon: Nobita’s Sky Utopia Soars has made over 2.5 billion yen (~US$19 million) in total.

Other anime films on the weekend ranking are The First Slam Dunk at fourth place and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba -To the Swordsmith Village- at eighth. The First Slam Dunk is currently placed 26th on the all-time ranking with a total gross of 12.46 billion yen (~US$94.8 million).

Melvyn originally wanted to write about video games, and he did so for a few years, starting from his college days. He still writes about video games sometimes, but now focuses on anime-related news content and the occasional review. Some of his free time is spent self-learning Japanese, both out of interest in the language and because English-translated light novels and manga are expensive. Every anime season, Melvyn looks forward to discovering new standout episodes and OP/ED animation sequences, as well as learning about the storyboard artists and directors behind them.
