New key visuals have been released to promote the upcoming anime film Detective Conan: Kurogane no Submarine. The latest feature-length installment in the Detective Conan franchise will premiere in Japanese theaters on April 14, 2023.
The first two new “Black Side” visuals were revealed to celebrate the production team’s official Twitter account reaching 960,000 followers. They highlight various members of the villainous Black Organization, along with Ai Haibara.
The other two new “Conan Side” visuals showcase Conan Edogawa and his friends, as well as members of the FBI.
Yuzuru Tachikawa (Detective Conan: Zero the Enforcer, Mob Psycho 100 Season 3 chief director) is directing the film with Takeharu Sakurai (Detective Conan: The Crimson Bullet) as scriptwriter and Yuugo Kanno (Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween) as music composer. TMS Entertainment is in charge of the animation production.
Kurogane no Submarine is the 26th overall film in the Detective Conan franchise. Gosho Aoyama’s original manga was first serialized in Shogakukan’s Weekly Shounen Sunday magazine on January 19, 1994. A total of 102 tankoubon volumes have been released as of September 2022. Viz Media releases the manga in English as Case Closed.
The manga has also inspired a long-running TV anime series from TMS Entertainment that has been running since 1996. A compilation film titled Detective Conan: Ai Haibara Monogatari ~Kurotetsu no Mystery Train~ was released in Japan on January 6, 2023. It is set before the events of Kurogane no Submarine.
The film follows Conan and the Detective Boys, who are invited to Hachijojima Island by Sonoko Suzuki. Near the island where they’re doing whale watching, an ocean facility called the Pacific Buoy is testing a new technology that utilizes facial recognition. Suddenly, Subaru Okiya informs Conan that a Europol member has been assassinated in Germany. Afterwards, Conan sneaks into the Pacific Buoy and discovers that an engineer with an important USB has been kidnapped by the Black Organization. Meanwhile, a looming threat threatens the safety of Ai Haibara.
