A new Kinnikuman anime project has been announced to be in development. The new anime will commemorate the franchise’s 40th anniversary, with a teaser visual also being revealed. Further details about the animation studio, voice cast, and production staff have not yet been revealed.

The original manga series is created by duo Yudetamago, consisting of writer Takashi Shimada and artist Yoshinori Nakai. It originally ran in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from May 1979 to May 1987. The manga was then revived in November 2011 for a continued run in Shueisha’s web magazine Shuu Play News, where it continues to be serialized. A total of 81 tankoubon volumes have been released as of March 2023.

The manga series has inspired numerous spin-off manga and anime adaptations, video games, anime films, and merchandise like action figures and collectible erasers. One of the manga spinoff series, Kinnikuman Lady, was recently published from June 2008 to June 2013.

The first long-running TV anime series by Toei Animation aired from April 3, 1983 to October 1, 1986 for a total of 137 episodes. In 2002, another Kinnikuman anime series was licensed by 4Kids Entertainment and aired on the Fox Box programming block as Ultimate Muscle: The Kinnikuman Legacy. The first season consisted of 51 total episodes and aired in 2002. The second season contained 26 episodes and aired from 2003 to 2004. Discotek Media licensed both seasons and will release the full 77-episode series on Blu-ray in early 2023.

The story follows the titular Kinnikuman, whose real name is Suguru Kinniku. He is a clumsy, foolish superhero who learns that he is the missing prince of the planet Kinniku — a distant planet known for creating the greatest superheroes in the universe. In order to prove himself worthy of the planet’s throne, he must enter numerous wrestling tournaments to prove his worth and face off against evil supermen known as battle evil Choujins.
