The cover of the 86 -Eighty Six- Mahou Shoujo Regina ☆ Lena ~Tatakae! Ginga Koukou Senkan San Magnolia~ novella featured the tagline, “This number is the name given to the guardian spirits. These boys and girls protect the fleet and its people.”

The main 86 -Eighty Six- light novel series began in 2017 and has 12 volumes as of February 2023. The books, which are published under KADOKAWA’s Dengeki Bunko label, are illustrated by Shirabi with mechanical designs from I-IV

Yen Press describes the plot as:

A War Without Casualties

The Republic of San Magnolia has long been under attack from the neighboring Giadian Empire’s army of unmanned drones known as the Legion. After years of painstaking research, the Republic finally developed autonomous drones of their own, turning the one-sided struggle into a war without casualties-or at least, that’s what the government claims.

In truth, there is no such thing as a bloodless war. Beyond the fortified walls protecting the eighty-five Republic territories lies the “nonexistent” Eighty-Sixth Sector. The young men and women of this forsaken land are branded the Eighty-Six and, stripped of their humanity, pilot the “unmanned” weapons into battle…

The light novels inspired a two-cour anime adaptation directed by Toshimasa Ishii (Fate/Grand Order Absolute Demonic Front: Babylonia and Sword Art Online: Alicization – War of Underworld storyboarder) with A-1 Pictures as the animation production company. The first cour ran from April 2021 to June 2021 while the second cour premiered on October 2, 2021. The second cour experienced some episode delays, with the final two episodes only airing in March 2022.

Melvyn originally wanted to write about video games, and he did so for a few years, starting from his college days. He still writes about video games sometimes, but now focuses on anime-related news content and the occasional review. Some of his free time is spent self-learning Japanese, both out of interest in the language and because English-translated light novels and manga are expensive. Every anime season, Melvyn looks forward to discovering new standout episodes and OP/ED animation sequences, as well as learning about the storyboard artists and directors behind them.
