Bocchi the Rock! Wins Anime of the Year at 9th Anime Trending Awards

Bocchi the Rock! has won Anime of The Year at the 9th Anime Trending Awards after premiering as a sleeper hit during the Fall 2022 anime season. The musical slice-of-life anime series garnered a leading eight total wins over all the other nominees, setting a record for the most number of awards won at the Anime Trending Awards. 

In addition to Anime of the Year, Bocchi the Rock! also won in the following categories:  

  • • Best in Adapted Screenplay: Erika Yoshida 
  • • Best in Episode Directing and Storyboard: Takeshi Seo (Episode Director), Keiichirou Saitou (Storyboard), Yuusuke Kawakami (Live Director) 
  • • Best in Soundtrack: Tomoki Kikuya (Extended Credits include composers and lyricists otoha, Daichi Yoshioka, Hidemasa Naitou, Kayoko Kusano, Kouki Adaniya, Ai Higuchi, ZAQ, Keiki Nishida)
  • • Best in Voice Cast: Yoshino Aoyama, Ikumi Hasegawa, Saku Mizuno, Sayumi Suzushiro 
  • • Comedy Anime of the Year
  • • Music Anime of the Year
  • • Slice-of-Life Anime of the Year

Bocchi the Rock! was previously voted as Anime of the Season in Anime Trending’s Fall 2022 Anime Awards. It was awarded five other distinctions that included Favorite Female Character for Hitori “Bocchi” Gotou and Favorite Ending Theme Song for “Distortion” by the Kessoku Band. The anime also won the genre awards for Comedy, Music, and Slice-of-Life. 

The anime series had an inauspicious start in the Most Anticipated Fall 2022 Anime Polls, ranking as high as 13th place. For its first week on the charts, the series debuted modestly in eighth place. Between weeks two to four, it ranked as high as fourth place. From the fifth week onwards, the anime secured its position as one of the highest ranking series for the Fall 2022 season. After week five, the series flip flopped between first and second place, dropping as low as third in week nine. It finished off strong in the last two weeks of the Fall 2022 charts, settling for second place.

Bocchi the Rock! was directed by Keiichirou Saitou (ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Dept. – Regards co-director, Sonny Boy episode director), with Erika Yoshida (Artiswitch, Tower of God) as series screenwriter and scriptwriter, and Kerorira (Wonder Egg Priority animation weapon design, animation director, CHARMS!! 1st ANIMATION PV director and character designer) as character designer. CloverWorks handled the animation production for the series.

Other staff members include Yuusuke Yamamoto (My Senpai is Annoying ending director, Asteroid in Love opening director) as assistant director, Yuusuke Kawakami (Wonder Egg Priority action director) as director of the live performance sequences, Yuuki Itou (Takt Op.Destiny director) as the live performances’ animator, Asuka Yokota (Akebi’s Sailor Uniform) as color designer, Yasunao Moriyasu (Akebi’s Sailor Uniform co-art director) as art director, Tsubasa Kanamori (My Dress-Up Darling) as photography director, and Tomoki Kikuya (Harem in the Labyrinth of Another World) as music composer.

The main voice cast is headlined by Yoshino Aoyama as Hitori, Sayumi Suzushiro as Nijika, Saku Mizuno as Ryo Yamada, and Ikumi Hasegawa as Ikuyo Kita. 

The anime is based on the 4-koma manga series by Aki Hamaji and was first serialized as a guest workpiece in Houbunsha’s Manga Time Kirara Max on December 19, 2017. It received full serialization in the magazine on March 19, 2018. The manga is published under the Manga Time KR Comics label and has released five tankoubon volumes as of November 2022. The first volume of a spin-off anthology manga was also released October 10, 2022.

Bocchi the Rock! premiered on October 8, 2022 and concluded with 12 episodes. Crunchyroll streamed the anime worldwide as it aired in Japan and describes the show as: 

Hitori Gotou, “Bocchi-chan,” is a girl who’s so introverted and shy around people that she’d always start her conversations with “Ah…”

After becoming a skilled guitar player, she uploaded videos of herself playing the guitar to the internet under the name “Guitar Hero” and fantasized about performing at her school’s cultural festival concert. But not only could she not find any bandmates, before she knew it, she was in high school and still wasn’t able to make a single friend!

She was really close to becoming a shut-in, but one day, Nijika Ijichi, the drummer in Kessoku Band, reached out to her. And because of that, her everyday life started to change little by little…
