The new series comes after the announcement that original Pokémon protagonist Ash Ketchum/Satoshi will not be returning as the series’ protagonist. He finally became World Champion in November 2022 during the airing of Pokémon Ultimate Journeys: The Series. The anime premiered on December 17, 2021, which in turn is part of the long-running Pokémon anime series that debuted on April 1, 1997.

Ash and Pikachu are currently starring in an 11-episode series titled Pokémon: Mezame Pokémon Master, which is described by The Pokémon Company as “the final chapter in Ash and Pikachu’s story.” It first premiered in Japan on January 13, 2023. A separate anime special titled Pokémon: Harukanaru Aoi Sora premiered on December 23, 2022.
