The One Piece Film Red Twitter account revealed today that the film has earned 31.9 billion yen, or roughly US$246 million, worldwide. A new visual from One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda was released to commemorate its international gross.
In Japan, the film ended its theatrical run on January 29 with 19.7 billion yen (~US$151.9 million), making it the country’s eighth highest-grossing film. This puts it above Howl’s Moving Castle, the previous eighth place holder, and directly below Princess Mononoke. Among anime films, One Piece Film Red is the fifth highest-grossing title in Japan.
One Piece Film Red premiered in Japan on August 6 as the 15th movie in the franchise. The film introduced the diva Uta (Kaori Nazuka; singing voice Ado), who is also Shank’s daughter, into the One Piece universe. It also inspired a series of music videos, the most popular of which received 113 million views on YouTube. The Uta no Uta: One Piece Film Red album debuted on August 17 at #1 on the Japan Hot Albums Billboard chart and is ranked #11 at the time of writing.
Additionally, Uta has appeared in the anime series via a prequel episode and end cards.
Gorou Taniguchi (Code Geass: Lelouch of the Re;Surrection, One Piece: Taose! Kaizoku Gyanzakku) directed the movie with Tsutomu Kuroiwa (One Piece Film: Gold, GANTZ:O) as scriptwriter, Masayuki Satou (One Piece Film Strong World character designer and animation director) as character designer and chief animation director, and Oda as general producer and original story creator.
