Kaina of the Great Snow Sea Anime To Have Sequel Movie

A movie sequel has been announced for the upcoming Kaina of the Great Snow Sea anime, which premieres in Japan on January 11 (effectively January 12 at 12:55 AM JST).

More details will be revealed at a later date.

Kaina of the Great Snow Sea is a 40th anniversary project for Polygon Picture. Crunchyroll and Bilibili are streaming the anime outside Japan. The premise is described as:

A world blanketed in an endless and ever-growing ocean of snow.
The people eke out a living, either huddled around the roots of enormous trees dotting the surface, or high in the canopy, which spreads over the planet’s atmosphere.
A chance meeting between Kaina, a youth from the canopy, and Liliha, a young woman from the surface, sets off a chain of events that will change the fate of the world.

Manga artist Tsutomu Nihei is credited with the original concept for Ooyukiumi No KainaHiroaki Ando (ListenersAjin: Demi-Human) is serving as director with Sadayuki Murai (Sabikui Bisco) and Tetsuya Yamada (Knights of Sidonia) as scriptwriters and Ryouhei Fukushi (Knights of Sidonia: Love Woven in the Stars co-character designer) and Kyoko Kotani (Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch of Mercury character animation director) as animation character designers.

Other staff include Mitsunori Kataama (Knights of Sidonia: Love Woven in the Stars art director) as visual concept designer, Kimiko Kubo (Her Blue Sky background artist) as art director, Hironori Nochi (Knights of Sidonia: Love Woven in the Stars) as color designer, Kazumasa Izawa (Knights of Sidonia: The Movie layout and animation supervisor) as chief layout and animation supervisor, and Kohta Yamamoto (Attack on Titan The Final Season co-composer) and Misaki Umase as music composers.

Meanwhile, the cast includes Yoshimasa Hosoya as Kaina, Rie Takahashi as Ririha, Ayumu Murase as Yaona, Maaya Sakamoto as Amelote, Katsuyuki Konishi as Orinoga, Tomokazu Sugita as Sogapoji, Nobuyuki Hiyama as Handagil, and Kenyu Horiuchi as Haresora.

A Kodansha-published manga by Itoe Takemoto begin serialization in Monthly Shonen Sirius and Magazine Pocket in February 2022. The first tankoubon volume was released in December of that year.
