The NieR: Automata Ver 1.1a anime has received a new “promotion file” trailer centering on lead characters 2B and 9S. The trailer, which is accompanied by the “Crumbling Lies” track from the video game, includes some clips of 2B in action.

Additionally, it was revealed that the anime will premiere in Japan on January 7 (effectively January 8 at 12 AM JST). The show is also scheduled “to broadcast in over 160 countries and regions.”

More staff members were revealed as well, including Shun Tachibana (Engage Kiss ending animation key animator) as action supervisor, Masaki Inada (86: Eighty Six action supervisor) as CG action and Blender supervisor, Totonyan’s Hirofumi Sakagami (Orient) as art director, Takahiro Mogi (Lonely Castle in the Mirror) as color designer, and Toshiaki Aoshima (Lycoris Recoil) as photography director.

NieR: Automata Ver 1.1a is inspired by 2017’s NieR: Automata, an open world action-RPG set in a distant future where androids battle to reclaim Earth from an army of alien-created machines. Nier creator Yoko Taro said that the “Ver 1.1a” affix in the anime’s title is due to the original title being “a story we created to be a game, so copying it as is wouldn’t make an interesting story for an anime. So I brought up the idea of changing things around.”

The staff includes Ryouji Masuyama (Blend S, The Idolmaster: Cinderella Girls assistant director) as director and series composer, Yoko Taro as co-series composer, Jun Nakai (Lord El-Melloi II’s Case Files {Rail Zeppelin} Grace note) as character designer and chief animation director, and  MONACA (Assassin’s Pride) as music composer. A-1 Pictures is the animation production company.

Meanwhile, the returning cast from the game includes Yui Ishikawa as 2B, Natsuki Hanae as 9S, Chiaki Kano as YoRHa’s commander, Keiko Isobe as Operator 6O, Meari Hatsumi as Operator 21O, Aoi Yuuki as Pascal, Daisuke Namikawa as Adam, and Tatsuhisa Suzuki as Eve. Atsumi Tanezaki is playing Lily, a character from the YoRHa prequel stage play and its manga adaptation.

NieR: Automata was developed by PlatinumGames and published by Square Enix as a sequel to 2010’s Nier, which is set thousands of years before the events of Automata. Like the first game, which was developed by the now-defunct CaviaNieR: Automata combined third-person hack-and-slash gameplay with shoot-em-up and side-scrolling elements.
