The upcoming new Rascal Does Not Dream anime, which will conclude the high school phase of the story, will receive a theatrical release in Japan. A teaser visual featuring Kaede Azusagawa was released with the announcement.

The new anime project will cover the light novels’ Rascal Does Not Dream of a Sister Venturing Out and Rascal Does Not Dream of Randoseru Girl arcs, which are told in volumes eight and nine respectively. The Kaede teaser visual is for the former’s adaptation.

The Kadokawa-published light novels, which are written by Hajime Kamoshida and illustrated by Keji Mizoguchi, previously inspired the 2018 Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai TV anime series and the 2019 movie sequel Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl. The series sees protagonist Sakuta Azusagawa helping various girls who suffer from a supernatural affliction dubbed Adolescence Syndrome, which is related to the issues they face in their lives.

Yen Press describes Rascal Does Not Dream of a Sister Venturing Out as:

After a draining December, Sakuta is quickly nearing the end of his second year of high school. Since Mai is a third-year student, they don’t have much time left together before graduation rolls around. Meanwhile, his sister, Kaede, is slowly but steadily venturing outdoors again. Just as she begins to find her footing, she announces her most ambitious goal yet—attending her brother’s high school! Sakuta knows better than anyone how difficult this will be for Kaede, and he’s ready to support her however he can. He’s just not sure if that’s what’s best for her…or what she really wants…

Returning as staff for the anime are Souichi Masui as director, Masahiro Yokotani as series composer and scriptwriter, and Satomi Tamura as character designer. Cloverworks is again the animation production company.

Meanwhile, the returning cast includes Kaito Ishikawa as Sakuta, Asami Seto as Mai Sakurajima, Yurika Kubo as Kaede, Nao Touyama as Tomoe Koga, Atsumi Tanezaki as Rio Futaba, Maaya Uchida as Nodoka Toyohama, and Inori Minase as Shoko Makinohara.

The Rascal Does Not Dream light novel series began in 2014 and has 11 volumes published under the Dengeki Bunko label as of December 2020. Its arcs/volumes have received manga adaptations by various authors, with the latest so far being the adaptation of Rascal Does Not Dream of Logical Witch (volume 3 of the light novel).

Melvyn originally wanted to write about video games, and he did so for a few years, starting from his college days. He still writes about video games sometimes, but now focuses on anime-related news content and the occasional review. Some of his free time is spent self-learning Japanese, both out of interest in the language and because English-translated light novels and manga are expensive. Every anime season, Melvyn looks forward to discovering new standout episodes and OP/ED animation sequences, as well as learning about the storyboard artists and directors behind them.
