Muv-Luv Alternative Season 2 Releases Operation 21st Visual

The Muv-Luv Alternative anime has received a new visual that depicts Operation 21st, a major engagement between a joint United Nations-Imperial Japan force and the BETA that will be covered in the show’s upcoming 20th episode (the seventh of the second season) of the same name.

Muv-Luv Alternative Season 2 premiered on October 6 and is streaming on Crunchyroll and Muse Asia’s YouTube channel. The first season aired during the Fall 2021 anime season and ran for 12 episodes. The anime is based on the visual novel of the same name.

Crunchyroll describes the first season as:

A story of the bonds between those who fight, in a world pushed to its limits. On one of the countless parallel worlds that exist throughout spacetime, humanity has fought a decades long war against the BETA, hostile extraterrestrial invaders, using humanoid fighting machines called Tactical Surface Fighters. This is a story of how humanity lives and dies while on the brink of extinction…

Muv-Luv Alternative‘s main staff includes Yukio Nishimoto (Ongaku Shoujo) as director, Tatsuhiko Urahata (Sakura Wars the Animation) as series composer, Takuya Tani (One Room 3rd) as character designer, and Evan Call (Violet Evergarden) as music composer. The animation production companies include Flagship Line and Yumeta Company x Graphinica. (Flagship Line was established by Avex Pictures and Graphinica in 2018).

Other staff include Yumi Uchibayashi (Record of Ragnarok) as color designer, Ken Naito (Magia RecordPuella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story) as art director, Takeo Ogiwara (Re:cycle of the Penguindrum: Kimi no Ressha wa Seizon Senryaku) as photography director, and Kazuya Ooya (Psycho-Pass 3: First Inspector co-3D director) as CG director.

Meanwhile, the main cast includes Kouichi Kamiki as Takeru, Tomori Kusunoki as Sumika Kagami, Karin Nanami as Meiya Mitsurugi. Miku Itou as Sasaki Chizuru, Iori Saeki as Kei Ayamine, Takako Tanaka as Miki Tamase, and Lynn as Mikoto Yoroi. 

The Muv-Luv Alternative visual novel was first released in Japan in 2006 as a darker and more serious sequel to 2003’s Muv-Luv and its second half, Muv-Luv Unlimited. It takes place in an alternate Earth first introduced in Unlimited, in which mankind is facing extinction from an alien race known as the BETA. Muv-Luv and Muv-Luv Alternative were released on Steam in 2016 and 2017 respectively.
