The production team for Kaina of the Great Snow Sea (Ooyukiumi No Kaina) has revealed that the anime series will premiere on January 11, 2023. A new key visual and PV trailer have also been unveiled, along with additional production staff members and its broadcast details on Fuji TV’s +Ultra programming block.
The trailer also previews the anime’s opening and ending theme song. The opening theme “Telepath” is performed by Japanese rock duo yorushika while the ending theme “Juvenile” is sung by Japanese vocal group GReeeeN.
The addition production staff includes Ryouhei Fukushi and Kyoko Kotani as animation character designers, Mitsunori Kataama as visual concept designer, Naoya Tanaka and Kazuma Teshigahara as production designers, Kimiko Kubo as art director, Hironori Nochi as color key artist, Kazumasa Izawa as chief layout animation supervisor, and Masanori Tsuchiya as sound director. Kohta Yamamoto (Attack on Titan The Final Season, Sacrificial Princess & the King of Beasts) and Misaki Umase are composing the musical score.
Manga artist Tsutomu Nihei (BLAME!) is credited with the original concept for Ooyukiumi No Kaina. Hiroaki Ando (Listeners, Ajin: Demi-Human) is serving as the series director with Sadayuki Murai (Sabikui Bisco) and Tetsuya Yamada (Knights of Sidonia) as scriptwriters. Polygon Pictures is handling the animation production.
The main voice cast is headlined by Yoshimasa Hosoya as Kaina, Rie Takahashi as Ririha, Ayumu Murase as Yaona, Maaya Sakamoto as Amelote, Katsuyuki Konishi as Orinoga, Tomokazu Sugita as Sogapoji, Nobuyuki Hiyama as Handagil, and Kenyu Horiuchi as Haresora.
A manga series was launched by Itoe Takemoto (The Beast Player) in Kodansha’s Pocket Shonen Magazine on February 26, 2022.
Kaina of the Great Snow Sea is the 40th anniversary project of Polygon Pictures. Crunchyroll will stream the anime series as it airs and describes the premise as:
In another world, an ever-growing Sea of Snow has engulfed the planet surface.
The people struggle to survive living around the routes of a massive Orbital Tree, whose branches spread into the Celestial Membrane high above the ground.
Change comes to this dying world after Kaina, a boy from the Celestial Membrane, encounters a girl from the surface called Ririha.
