Following the success of One Piece Film Red, J-pop star and singer Ado, who provided the singing voice for the character Uta, has signed with American record label Geffen Records.
By signing with the label she will be able to release music in the United States, alongside her current deal with Virgin Music. She is also currently represented by the artist management company Cloud Nine.
Ado has most recently performed the theme song for One Piece Film Red titled “New Genesis,” as well as six other songs in the film. All of the musical tracks can be heard on the album UTA’S SONGS ONE PIECE FILM RED, which is available on various music streaming platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube Music.
“New Genesis” peaked at the number one spot on the Billboard Japan Hot 100 for over six weeks. It also peaked at the top of Apple Music’s Top 100: Global Chart and has accumulated over 10 million weekly streams.
On signing her record deal, Ado provided the following statement:
I’m so honored and excited to join the Geffen Records family. I’m looking forward to connecting with my fans internationally. Much love and thanks to all!
Ado first debuted as a singer in high school and continues to perform in a mysterious nature with an undisclosed identity. She uses an anime-styled avatar to represent her visual image. Her music has been described as capturing the angst and cautious optimism of Japan’s younger generations, with soaring high notes to a signature snarl.
She released her first major label single in 2020 titled “Usseewa” and followed that up with singles such as“Readymade,” “Gira Gira” and “Odo” to spotlight her diverse vocal force. In 2022, she released her debut full-length album Kyougen, which became one of the year’s biggest hits, topping both physical sales and streaming chart rankings.
One Piece Film Red is the 15th overall anime film for the long-running One Piece franchise. It is produced by Toei Animation and One Piece creator Eiichiro Oda. Since its release on August 6th, the film has grossed over 17.26 billion yen (US$116 million) at the box office, becoming the ninth highest grossing film in Japan overall.
Crunchyroll and Toei Animation will screen the anime film in North America on November 4, 2022. It describes the synopsis as:
Uta —the most beloved singer in the world. Renowned for concealing her own identity when performing, her voice has come to be described as “otherworldly.” Now, for the first time ever, Uta will reveal herself to the world at a live concert. As the venue fills with all kinds of Uta fans—excited pirates, the Navy watching closely, and the Straw Hats led by Luffy who simply came to enjoy her sonorous performance—the voice that the whole world has been waiting for is about to resound. The story begins with the shocking fact that she is Shanks’ daughter.
