Milan Records have announced that they are releasing Kenshi Yonezu’s newest single “KICK BACK” on various music streaming platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube Music. The song is the opening theme song for the hit anime series Chainsaw Man, which premiered on October 11, 2022.
“KICK BACK” features arrangements composed in collaboration with Daiki Tsuneta of rock band King Gnu and includes samples from J-pop girl group Morning Musume’s single “Souda! We’re Alive.”
News of Yonezu’s involvement was first announced at the series’ world premiere event, streamed on the official Chainsaw Man YouTube channel. It featured appearances from anime voice actors Kikunosuke Toya (voice of Denji), Tomori Kusunoki (voice of Makima), Shougo Sakata (voice of Aki Hayakawa), Fairouz Ai (voice of Power) and series director Ryuu Nakayama. “KICK BACK” was also previewed in a special teaser video afterwards, with special messages from Yonezu and Tsuneta included.
When discussing the song, Kenshi Yonezu provided the following statement:
“I wrote ‘KICK BACK’ for the anime adaptation of Chainsaw Man. This is such an honor, as I love the original manga series. Finding the right sounds for this immensely powerful series was challenging, but I created this song by patiently building it up, one piece at a time. I hope you enjoy listening to it. Thank you very much.”
In addition to Yonezu’s song, Chainsaw Man will also feature a variety of new ending theme songs for every episode from a lineup of 12 musicians. They include contributions from ano, Eve, Aimer, Kanaria, Queen Bee, syudou, ZUTOMAYO, TK from Ling tosite Sigure, TOOBOE, Vaundy, and PEOPLE 1.
The upcoming action-horror Chainsaw Man series is an anime adaptation of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s manga of the same name. Part one was serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from December 3, 2018 to December 14, 2020. Part two is currently serialized in Shonen Jump+ online magazine. 12 tankoubon volumes have been released as of October 4, 2022. Crunchyroll is streaming the anime as parts of its Fall 2022 anime lineup.
