The Simpsons annual “Treehouse of Horror” series will be airing a Death Note anime-styled parody titled “Lisanime” for its upcoming Treehouse of Horror XXXIII Halloween special. A visual has been released on the series’ official Twitter account, showcasing Lisa and Bart in their anime-styled forms. The special will air on October 30, 2022.
At San Diego Comic Con 2022 this past July, The Simpsons executive producer Matt Selman explained that their take on the Death Note series will feature an entirely different animation studio handling the production. His team wanted to bring an “incredibly authentic ‘Simpsons’ anime” to audiences and not try to take on every anime because of its “unbelievably rich and diverse genre within itself.”
It is not currently known which animation production studio or staff members are involved in the “Lisanime” segment of the Treehouse of Horror XXXIII episode.
This isn’t the first time The Simpsons have dabbled into parodying anime and manga works. Another Death Note parody titled “Murder, He Wrote” was released previously in September 2008 in the 14th issue of The Simpsons’ Treehouse of Horror comic book series.
In Treehouse of Horror XXV, the segment “The Others” briefly featured members of The Simpsons parodying various anime characters, including Homer as One Piece’s Roronoa Zoro, Marge as Bleach’s Rangiku, Bart as Naruto, Lisa as Attack on Titan’s Mikasa Ackerman, Maggie as Pokemon’s Pikachu, and Santa’s Little Helper as Spirited Away’s Haku.
Another Simpsons episode, “Married to the Blob,” featured a tribute to the film of Hayao Miyazaki in a dream sequence. It showcases cameos from Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, Ponyo, Princess Mononoke, Howl’s Moving Castle, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and Porco Rosso.
