More episodes of the ongoing Uncle From Another World isekai anime are getting delayed, with an announcement from the show’s Twitter account revealing that September’s schedule will consist entirely of reruns. The series is currently up to its seventh episode, which premiered on August 31.

Uncle From Another World had previously delayed its fifth episode from August 3 to August 17, citing a surge in Covid cases at Tokyo-based animation production studio Atelier Pontdarc and other places involved in the anime’s production.

The official statement attributes the new delay to the continued proliferation of infections. However, on August 28, Classroom of the Elite Season 2 assistant director Ippei Ichii, who directed and storyboarded Uncle From Another World‘s fifth episode, tweeted that they stepped away from helming the 10th episode (although they still participated in the storyboarding and voice-recording processes) due to there being “zero” animation staff apart from the studio’s internal members*, indicating production issues that extend beyond Covid.

(*It is very common for portions of an anime production to be subcontracted to other companies, and Uncle From Another World is no exception, as seen in the ending credits of its existing episodes).

Sakuga Blog founder kVIN also expressed doubt about the official reason for the delay, noting that while Covid “*has* been a major reason behind many delays… it’s been twisted into a PR shield.”

Uncle From Another World premiered in Japan on July 6. The anime is also available internationally on Netflix, albeit with different release schedules. The show is based on the Kadokawa-published manga by Hotondoshindeiru, which began in 2018 and has seven tankoubon volumes as of February 2022.

The main staff includes Shigeki Kawai (Blue Exorcist assistant director) as director, Kenta Ihara (Mieruko-Chan) as series composer and scriptwriter, and Kazuhiro Oota (Natsu no Arashi!) as character designer. Meanwhile, the main cast includes Takehito Koyasu as Ojisan, Jun Fukuyama as Takafumi, Mikako Komatsu as Fujimiya, Haruka Tomatsu as Elf, Aoi Yuuki as Mabel, and Aki Toyosaki as Alicia.

Yen Press describes the manga as:

Seventeen years ago, Takafumi’s uncle fell into a coma, but now he’s back like a man risen from his grave. Soon, Takafumi discovers two bizarre things: His uncle treasures video games above all else, and, while comatose, he was actually transported to another world as some heroic guardian! Now, not only does Takafumi have to room with an uncle who is literally magical, he also has to catch the guy up on two decades of history—smartphones, high-speed internet, modern anime tropes…and the traumatic outcome of the ’90s console war!
