Crunchyroll Expo announced New Crunchy City Music Fest, a three-day music festival featuring domestic and international artists, to occur concurrently with the anime convention. New Crunchy City Music Fest also announced their first headlining act, 88rising’s ATARASHII GAKKO!
Select acts from the New Crunchy City Music Fest will be available for stream and digital replay until August 9, 2022. Additional details on alternative viewings will come soon.
ATARASHII GAKKO! are a group of four young women, donning sailor uniforms traditionally worn by Japanese students in the 70s and 80s, who have created their own unique brand of music and choreography. Their combination of Japanese butoh dance, headbanging, and street dancing with J-Pop, Showa-era kayokyoku, punk, and rap music has created a genre unique only to ATARASHII GAKKO!
Crunchyroll describes ATARASHII GAKKO! as:
“The outlandish quartet — comprised of kawaii-but-fierce Mizyu, wildcard Suzuka, graceful Kanon and funky Rin — break down genre walls to create music mixing elements of pop, jazz, hip-hop, rock and more, delivered with a punk energy and featuring frantic dance moves, choreographed by the four members themselves.”
Along with the New Crunchy City Music Fest, Crunchyroll Expo offers four distinct districts: Central Shopping District which features merchandise and Crunchyroll Expo exclusive swag; Arts District which features nearly 150 artists; Theater District for anime premieres and screenings, and Super Arcade for gaming, raving, and more unique programming.
Access to the music festival is included free with tickets to Crunchyroll Expo. From August 5 to August 7, 2022, the anime convention will be at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center in San Jose, California.
