The Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko movie will land in North American theaters this June. Regular screenings will begin on June 3, while an exclusive premiere screening will be held on June 2.

Tickets are set to go on sale on April 29. GKIDS announced its acquisition of the movie’s North American distribution rights back in November 2021.

Fortune Favors Lady Nikuko premiered in Japan on June 11, 2021. GKIDS describes the film, which is based on a 2011 novel by Kanako Nishi, as:

Brash single mother Nikuko is well-known for her bold spirit, much to the embarrassment of Kikuko, her pensive yet imaginative daughter. In contrast to her mother, Kikuko wants nothing more than to fit in as she navigates the everyday social dramas of middle school. Life in the harbor is peaceful until a shocking revelation from the past threatens to uproot the pair’s tender relationship.

The anime’s staff includes Ayumu Watanabe (Children of the Sea) as director, Satomi Ooshima (Hataraki Man) as scriptwriter, Kenichi Konishi (Children of the Sea) as character designer and chief animation director, Shinji Kimura (Children of the Sea) as art director, and Takatsugu Muramatsu (Lu Over the Wall) as music composer. Studio 4°C is the animation production company.

Meanwhile, the cast includes Shinobu Ootake as Nikuko, Cocomi as Kikuko, Natsuki Hanae as Ninomiya, and Izumi Ishii as Maria.

Melvyn originally wanted to write about video games, and he did so for a few years, starting from his college days. He still writes about video games sometimes, but now focuses on anime-related news content and the occasional review. Some of his free time is spent self-learning Japanese, both out of interest in the language and because English-translated light novels and manga are expensive. Every anime season, Melvyn looks forward to discovering new standout episodes and OP/ED animation sequences, as well as learning about the storyboard artists and directors behind them.
