Classroom of the Elite is based on the Kadokawa-published light novel series written by Shougo Kinugasa and illustrated by Tomoseshunsaku. The light novels began in 2015 and ran until 2019 with 11 main volumes and 3 short story anthologies. A sequel series titled Classroom of the Elite: Year 2 began in 2020 and will see the release of its sixth main volume on February 25. The books are published under the MF Bunko J label.

Crunchyroll describes the anime as:

Kiyotaka Ayanokoji has just enrolled at Tokyo Koudo Ikusei Senior High School, where it’s said that 100% of students go on to college or find employment. But he ends up in Class 1-D, which is full of all the school’s problem children. What’s more, every month, the school awards students points with a cash value of 100,000 yen, and the classes employ a laissez-faire policy in which talking, sleeping, and even sabotage are permitted during class. One month later, Ayanokoji, Horikita, and the students of Class D learn the truth of the system in place within their school…

The main staff of Classroom of the Elite’s first season includes Seiji Kishi (Yuki Yuna is a Hero: The Great Mankai Chapter) and Hiroyuki Hashimoto (Is the Order a RabbitBLOOM) as directors, Yuu Kinome (IDOLY PRIDE director) as assistant director, Aoi Akashiro (Katana Maidens Toji No Miko) as series composer, and Kazuaki Morita (Fate/Grand Carnival 1st Season co-character designer) as character designer. Lerche is the animation production company. Meanwhile, the cast includes Chiba as Kiyotaka Ayanokoji, Akari Kitou as Suzune Horikita, Kubo as Kikyou Kushida, and M.A.O as Airi Sakura.

The light novels have also inspired several manga, including an adaptation of Classroom of the Elite: Year 2 that began in December 2021.

Melvyn originally wanted to write about video games, so he spent a few years, starting from his college days, doing so. He still likes video games, but now focuses on writing anime-related news content and the occasional review for Anime Trending. Some of his free time is spent self-learning Japanese, both out of interest in the language and because English-translated light novels and manga are expensive.
