Update: Kogyo Tsushin reported on February 7 that Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is now the 34th highest grossing movie in Japan. The film also ended the weekend (February 5 to February 6) in first place for the third consecutive week.
Original: The Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie has grossed over 10.4 billion yen (~$US90,200,000) in Japan, Toho revealed in a tweet today. The tweet also said that the movie had drawn over 7.6 million moviegoers.
On January 24, Kogyo Tsushin reported Jujutsu Kaisen 0 as having a total gross of over 9.3 billion yen (~US$81.7 million), making it the 50th top-grossing film in Japan. The film debuted in the country on December 24, 2021 and began MX4D, 4DX, and Dolby Cinema screenings on February 5, 2022.
The Jujutsu Kaisen 0 manga was first serialized in Jump GIGA in 2017 for four volumes under a different title and later published as a single volume manga in November 2018. It is a prequel to Akutami’s main Jujutsu Kaisen series, which began in March 2018 and received an anime adaptation in 2020. Both fall under the Jump Comics label.
VIZ Media describes the story as:
Yuta Okkotsu is a nervous high school student who is suffering from a serious problem—his childhood friend Rika has turned into a Curse and won’t leave him alone. Since Rika is no ordinary Curse, his plight is noticed by Satoru Gojo, a teacher at Jujutsu High, a school where fledgling exorcists learn how to combat Curses. Gojo convinces Yuta to enroll, but can he learn enough in time to confront the Curse that haunts him?
The main staff of the film includes Sunghoo Park as director, Hiroshi Seko as scriptwriter, Tadashi Hiramatsu as character designer, and Yui Umemoto as assistant director. All of them had previously worked on the Jujutsu Kaisen series. MAPPA is the animation production company. Meanwhile, the cast includes Megumi Ogata as Yuuta Okkotsu, Mikako Komatsu as Maki Zenin, Kouki Uchiyama as Toge Inumaki, Tomokazu Seki as Panda, Yuuichi Nakamura as Satoru Gojo, and Takahiro Sakurai as Suguru Geto.
