Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is now the 50th top-grossing movie in Japan with a total gross of over 9.3 billion yen (~US$81.7 million), Kogyo Tsushin has reported.

The report also mentioned that the film scored 409 million yen (~US$3.6 million) at the Japanese box office over the weekend, climbing back into the top spot of the weekend rankings in the process. The movie had ended the previous weekend (January 15 to January 16) in second place.

Kogyo Tsushin noted that the “Pure Love” visual boards of protagonist Yuuta Okkotsu, which began to be distributed to moviegoers from January 22, may have contributed to Jujutsu Kaisen 0‘s recent performance by bringing in repeat customers. The film brought in 288 thousand viewers over the weekend, with the total moviegoer count numbering at 6.81 million.

The visual board, which is limited to 500,000 moviegoers, is the second of four gifts, with the first gift being the Jujutsu Kaisen 0.5 booklet drawn by Jujutsu Kaisen 0 mangaka Gege Akutami. The distribution of the third and fourth gift types are scheduled to begin on February 5 and February 19 respectively.

A 15-second commercial was released to celebrate the success of the movie, which is set to receive MX4D, 4DX, and Dolby Cinema screenings starting February 5.

The Jujutsu Kaisen 0 manga was first serialized in Jump GIGA in 2017 for four volumes under a different title and later published as a single volume manga in November 2018. It is a prequel to Akutami’s main Jujutsu Kaisen series, which began in March 2018 and received an anime adaptation in 2020. Both fall under the Jump Comics label.

VIZ Media describes the story as:

Yuta Okkotsu is a nervous high school student who is suffering from a serious problem—his childhood friend Rika has turned into a Curse and won’t leave him alone. Since Rika is no ordinary Curse, his plight is noticed by Satoru Gojo, a teacher at Jujutsu High, a school where fledgling exorcists learn how to combat Curses. Gojo convinces Yuta to enroll, but can he learn enough in time to confront the Curse that haunts him?

The main staff of the film includes Sunghoo Park as director, Hiroshi Seko as scriptwriter, Tadashi Hiramatsu as character designer, and Yui Umemoto as assistant director. All of them had previously worked on the Jujutsu Kaisen series. MAPPA is the animation production company. Meanwhile, the cast includes Megumi Ogata as Yuuta Okkotsu, Mikako Komatsu as Maki Zenin, Kouki Uchiyama as Toge Inumaki, Tomokazu Seki as Panda, Yuuichi Nakamura as Satoru Gojo, and Takahiro Sakurai as Suguru Geto.
