Jujutsu Kaisen 0 has now made over 5.8 billion yen (~US$50 million) since opening on December 24, with Toho also reporting over 4.3 million in moviegoer numbers for the film. A new poster has been released to commemorate the film’s success.
The Jujutsu Kaisen prequel’s box office success was also reflected in the Japanese box office rankings. Kogyo Tsushin listed the movie as being in the top spot for both its second week (December 25 to December 31) and its second weekend (January 1 to January 2).

On December 27, Kogyo Tsushin noted that Jujutsu Kaisen 0‘s earnings during its first three days was only second to the massively popular Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train. On the same date, the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Twitter page revealed that the film had made over 2.6 billion yen of revenue.
Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is based on the manga by Gege Akutami, which was first serialized in Jump GIGA in 2017 for four volumes under a different title and later published as a single volume manga in November 2018. It is a prequel to Akutami’s main Jujutsu Kaisen series, which began in March 2018 and received an anime adaptation in 2020. Both fall under the Jump Comics label.
VIZ Media describes the story as:
Yuta Okkotsu is a nervous high school student who is suffering from a serious problem—his childhood friend Rika has turned into a Curse and won’t leave him alone. Since Rika is no ordinary Curse, his plight is noticed by Satoru Gojo, a teacher at Jujutsu High, a school where fledgling exorcists learn how to combat Curses. Gojo convinces Yuta to enroll, but can he learn enough in time to confront the Curse that haunts him?
The main staff includes Sunghoo Park as director, Hiroshi Seko as scriptwriter, Tadashi Hiramatsu as character designer, and Yui Umemoto as assistant director. All of them had previously worked on the Jujutsu Kaisen series. MAPPA is the animation production company.
